Southampton are planning a £20m bid for Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho.
That’s according to The Mirror, who are reporting that the French centre-back is a Summer target for the Premier League club after they missed out on him during January.
Saints boss Claude Puel is said to see Sakho as an ideal replacement for Virgil Van Dijk, with the Dutchman looking increasingly likely to be plucked by one of the top clubs at the end of the season.
Sakho is spending the rest of the campaign with Crystal Palace after joining them on loan in January for a fee of £2m.
Crucially the terms of the loan agreement do not include an option for the London club to buy the twenty-seven year old and Southampton are aiming to take advantage.
They were regularly linked with an offer during the January transfer window, but they couldn’t meet the asking price and have had to defer their interest to the end of the season.
Palace will also be keen on securing Sakho permanently, but that will depend on Sam Allardyce keeping them in the top flight before then.
Sakho has certainly helped the former England manager’s prospects of achieving that with some impressive performances at Selhurst Park so far.
