Liverpool have received a boost in the race to sign Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk.
Chelsea, who have also been strongly linked with the Holland international, have reportedly turned their attention to Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly.
That’s according to The Express, who are claiming that the Premier League leaders will move for the Senegalese international instead of the former Celtic man.
Van Dijk, who is currently out injured, has emerged as a transfer target for several top English clubs – including the Reds, if rumours and reports are to be believed.
Quality central defenders are in short supply in the modern game and so prices have gone up for those deemed to be good enough by the top clubs and Van Dijk is no exception.
Liverpool will need to stump up £40m+ to land the twenty-five year old at the end of the season, according to the news stories being circulated recently.
It seems unlikely that FSG would sanction such a high fee, but given the need for a quality partner for Joel Matip, who cost nothing but a signing-on fee from Schalke last Summer, they may take the plunge.
