After a frustrating draw against Manchester United, the Reds spent last week training hard and being put through their paces ahead of going head to head with West Brom last weekend. Up against the team that has been their biggest and fiercest rivals for decades, even the new management of Jurgen Klopp, who’s been recently praised for his ‘strong personality’ by ex-Man United boss Alex Ferguson, wasn’t enough to secure the Reds a victory, but with no European commitments for the week, Klopp focused on getting his squad fully prepared to tackle their next game and it clearly paid off, with a 2-1 victory for the Reds against West Brom at the weekend.
Regardless of the result against Man United, Liverpool FC are really making it as serious contenders this season, with both former player Daniel Agger and retired rival boss Alex Ferguson both confident that the Reds can make it to the top this season after their extremely promising first ten games. The Danish defender, who retired from football this summer after returning to his boyhood club Brondby for two seasons, says that Klopp’s new management is encouraging and for the Reds, it’s highly likely that the Premier League is there for the taking this season.
For both current and former Liverpool players, the expectations for the club’s performance in this year’s Premier League seasons have rocketed. Speaking to Liverpool FC’s official website, Agger said that this year is going especially well, and his expectations are higher than ever before, especially after last year. It’s not just Agger who’s gunning for his former club, either – former Liverpool striker John Aldridge, who runs a column in the Liverpool Echo, is impressed with the squad put together by Klopp for this season. In particular, he speaks about his opinion of Joel Matip, a player who’s been charged with bringing back the same composure on the ball and ability to read the game that Daniel Agger demonstrated during his time at the club. Aldridge went on to say how he was extremely impressed with how the Cameroon national has quickly adjusted to life on Merseyside and how willing he has been so far when it comes to building attacks from defence.
