Reds open bidding for Vermaelen

Vermaelen in action for Barcelona against former Liverpool star Fernando Torres

Liverpool have reportedly opened the bidding for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen.

That’s according to Spanish outlet Sport, who claim that the Reds have lodged an offer of around £8m for the Belgian.

Vermaelen, who is now thirty years old, joined the Spanish champions from Premier League club Arsenal in the Summer of 2014.

He has struggled to hold down a regular spot in Luis Enrique’s side and has mostly been used as a backup option.

It seems that he could be allowed to leave the Camp Nou in search of regular first-team action.

And he could be afforded that if he is signed by Jurgen Klopp, who is likely to be looking for cover for Mamadou Sakho.

The big Frenchman is set to be handed a ban by UEFA for failing a drugs test after the Europa League clash with Manchester United last month.

And with the former Paris Saint Germain being Klopp’s left sided defender, it adds weight to the speculation that Vermaelen could arrive as he also favours that side.
