Chelsea wanted to sign Christian Benteke in the Summer.
That’s according to Telegraph columnist Matt Law, who says that Jose Mourinho wanted to sign the Belgian from Aston Villa.
But his board were not prepared to match the £32.5m release fee – which Liverpool did after selling Raheem Sterling to Manchester City.
Mourinho reportedly ran the idea past Eden Hazard, an international colleague of Benteke, and even spoke to his agent.
Benteke was said to be keen on a switch to Stamford Bridge despite the prospect of being second choice to Diego Costa.
But the Premiership champions failed to come up with the required offer and were beaten to the big striker by Brendan Rodgers.
Chelsea went on to sign Radamel Falcao instead and his woeful form of last season at Manchester United has continued for them and he is said to be looking for a January exit from the London side.
Benteke is fit to face his once prospective employers tomorrow and will be looking to show Mourinho and Chelsea exactly what he missed out on.
