Former Liverpool defender and assistant manager Phil Thompson has labelled Daniel Sturridge’s season as “wasted”.
The forward was injured way back in September while on England duty and hasn’t managed to get back to full fitness since.
Sturridge has scored just five goals so far this season and it looks like his campaign could already be over and it would be a big disappointment for the twenty-five year old as he is finally in the position of being the number one striker at his club.
And Sky Sports pundit Thompson has rued the absence of the frontman.
“In all honesty, it’s really been a wasted season for Daniel, and it would have made such a difference to the team if he’d have been fit from the outset.” he told Sky Sports.
“Even the games he’s come back and played in, he hasn’t been able to get going. With him not having enough training sessions, it’s been very difficult for him to make an overall impact on the season.
“I know he’s scored a few goals but it’s just not been enough. His injuries have been going on for nearly the whole of the season – it’s been a nightmare for the lad.” he concluded.
The abject failure of Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini has compounded the absence of Sturridge – and not one of the three can feel comfortable about their future at the club.
