The Express are reporting that Liverpool are set to go head to head with Chelsea in the Summer for Barcelona midfielder Alex Song.
The Cameroon midfielder is currently on a season-long loan at Premiership side West Ham United and has caught the eye with some impressive performances for Sam Allardyce’s side.
And with captain Steven Gerrard set to leave Anfield for LA Galaxy in the Summer, it seems that manager Brendan Rodgers is on the look out for some midfield recruitments.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is said to see Song as an ideal backup for Nemanja Matic and is likely to put in a bid for the twenty-seven year old at the end of the season.
West Ham are also very keen in making his loan move a permanent one, but Song is said to be keen on getting Champions League football back on his agenda – and that could also be a problem for Rodgers, with his side currently fifth in the table.
That appears to give Chelsea the advantage in negotiations, but Song may be put off by the offer of a peripheral role at Stamford Bridge and could opt for Anfield with a better chance of regular football.
One further stumbling block for Rodgers would be the reported desire Song has to remain in London, as his family are said to like living there.
