Brendan Rodgers says Daniel Sturridge will be assessed before Wednesday’s Champions League clash with FC Basel, with the 25-year-old still struggling with a thigh injury sustained on international duty.
Sturridge has missed Liverpool’s last five games in all competitions, a run that has coincided with a poor run of form for the Reds.
Brendan Rodgers has seen his side pick up just one point from their last three Premier League games, and scrape to home wins against FC Ludogorets and Middlesbrough at Anfield.
Liverpool were desperate to get Sturridge back in the squad for Saturday’s derby draw with Everton, but Rodgers has since revealed the former Chelsea man was never really close to making even the bench.
“I’ll see how he is,” revealed Rodgers. “He wasn’t far away for Everton, but he certainly wasn’t fit enough to be on the bench.
“We needed to see if he could train on the Friday. But I got the message on the Thursday night that he would struggle, so he wasn’t really close to playing.”
Mario Balotelli has led the line for Liverpool in Sturridge’s absence, with the Italian managing just the one goal in his opening six Liverpool appearances – although that goal did come against Ludogorets in the opening Champions League match of the campaign.
