Liverpool to honour Steven Gerrard with testamonial match

Liverpool FC have announced that Steven Gerrard will be honoured with a testimonial match this summer, with the proceeds from the match being donated to charity.

Greek champions Olympiacos will be the opponents for the clash – the only pre-season game to be played at Anfield this summer – on Saturday, August 3rd at 2pm.

Money raised from the game will be for donated the Steven Gerrard Foundation. The charitable organisation – established in February 2011 – helps young people from under-privileged backgrounds.gerrard_2934410[1]

Olympiacos have confirmed that will also be donating their appearance fee to charity – opting to support local charities in Greece.

The last time Liverpool & Gerrard faced Olympiacos it was a memorable occasion of course. A stunning strike from the captain at Anfield in 2004 saw Liverpool come from behind to beat the Greek side 3-1 and progress to the next stage of the Champions League – with the Reds ultimately winning the competition that season.

Gerrard said: “I am delighted to be honoured by Liverpool with a testimonial match and particularly thrilled that Olympiacos have accepted my invitation to play the fixture. Last time we met proved to be such a memorable game both for me personally and Liverpool Football Club.

“I am also especially grateful that Olympiacos have truly embraced the aim of this match and chosen to donate their fee to charity. I am looking forward to what I know will be a fantastic game and a wonderful occasion.”
