Liverpool 2 – 2 Chelsea

Well with Torres returning it was always going to be a contested affair, especially with Rafa returning.  The game took on more significance with the two 0-0 draws recently for Liverpool and with Everton slipping up and a Derby not long away – ending the season above Everton was a possibility.

It didn’t take long for the first real chance and in the fourth minute Johnson was one on one with the keeper with good work from Saurez but seemed to slow down which give the keeper time and he poked it wide with his wrong foot and a good chance went begging.  Liverpool were pinging the ball around well and were looking in control as the game settled down.  As the game went past 15 minutes Chelsea started to settle and had some decent possession themselves.  Ramirez smashed a shot at Reina in the 19th minute which the Liverpool keeper blocked away.

The game was of good quality but not many chances being created, which changed in the 25th minute.  Off a Chelsea corner Oscar headed the ball into the net from a good delivery and Chelsea lead 1-0.  Smallest player on the pitch scoring – Agger didn’t follow him and Lucas vacated the near post which allowed him to score.  Chelsea sparked into life from the goal abd began looking sharp on the counter attack.  Reina looked unusually nervous in goal and nearly spilled a Luiz free kick in the 28th minute but managed to hold on to it at the second attempt.  Liverpool were looking very subdued and were losing the ball far too easily, Henderson whilst being busy was probably the guiltiest along with Downing.

“Liverpool winger Stewart Downing is a total enigma as a player. You see him sometimes and he looks to have real quality, but those performances are too few for me.”  Mark Lawrenson

Liverpool created an opening in the 40th minute with Suarez shooting from an angle and Cech beating it out after some good work by Downing.  He was in again just before half time but again from a tight angle but his shot was weak.  At half time the game was pretty even but both sides not playing very well and the game lacked quality.

Liverpool came out of the blocks quickly with Sturridge (coming on for Coutinho) galloping down the right with the ball played through to Gerrard but Cech pulls off a great save.  Sturridge then takes aim from 25 yards and smashes the post after a nice turn then the ball gets played across the face of goal but no one could make any contact.  Liverpool equalise in the 52nd minute with a long ball from Carra, headed down to Suarez who loops a great ball over the head of the defender and Sturridge pokes it in, great worked goal and well deserved equalizer.

Chelsea come back straight away and take the lead through a penalty. Suarez handles in the area and gets booked for it – what he was doing with his hand above his head is any ones guess.  Hazard makes no mistake from the penalty knocking it in to the left corner, hes hit 6 out of 7 penalties there but Reina goes the other way.  Liverpool were piling on the pressure but in the 65th minute something bizarre occurred.  Ivonovic goes to ground holding his arm and suggesting to the ref that Suarez has bitten him.  Replays show Suarez moving his head towards his arm and it’s inconclusive.  However the final replay shows him clearly trying to take a chunk out of him.  The only other occasion this has happend in the premier league was with Defoe but this is more serious with Suarez not just bearing his teeth but clearly trying to take a chunk out of him.  I suspect Suarez will be getting the headlines tomorrow for all the wrong reasons and also a very lengthy ban.  He was already on a yellow but manages to escape and doesn’t get sent off.  That is disgraceful from any player.

Liverpool keep pressing and are dominant but without creating many chances until late on in the game when Shelvey is played in with an excellent chance but shots with his weaker foot and misses the goal.  Shortly afterwards Sturridge leaves his foot in when Betrand clearing the ball, Liverpool play on and it all kicks off with Luiz having a go at Carra but it soon calms down.  That could have been a red card.

Liverpool keeps pressing and Chelsea are well under the cosh and the crowd roars as 6 minutes of injury time is announced.  Henderson tries to side foot but misses the far post by some distance and the game is virtually over.  In the last minute of injury time Liverpool keep pressing and Sturridge runs to the right before stopping looking who to pick out in the box.  He plays in a delightful cross to the near post and Suarez heads firmly at Cech, it hits his wrist and cannons into the net as Liverpool equalize.  What a dramatic end to a game but Liverpool firmly deserved the equalizer but no doubt the headlines will be for all the wrong reasons.
