Jose Enrique has backed Philippe Coutinho to emulate Luis Suarez in a Liverpool shirt in the coming years after a promising start to life at Anfield for the young Brazilian.
Coutinho signed from Inter Milan in January for £8.5m and has hit the ground running with goals against Swansea and Southampton already to his name in the Premiership. He has also linked up well with Suarez in particular, combining to great effect with his fellow South American.
“Luis had a really good year after just six months here before.” Enrique told the Liverpool Daily Post.
“Now you can see the real Luis, with how many goals he scores. With Coutinho, it’s going to happen the same, I think.
“You can see how well he is doing, but I think he’s going to improve a lot more. If he improves after what he has been doing already, he is going to be a top player for us.”
Coutinho has mostly played in front of Enrique on the left flank and they have combined well so far.
“It’s easy to play with good players. Everyone says sometimes me and Luis link well – I think Luis is a top player, and it’s easy to link well with him.
“With Coutinho, it’s the same thing. He’s a very good player. You can see he has amazing talent, and he’s still really young.”
